Habits to Keep Your Computer Healthy

🧼 Weekly Habits to Keep Your Computer Healthy

Simple Tips for Better Performance, Fewer Issues, and Longer Lifespan

Taking a few minutes each week to maintain your computer can prevent bigger problems down the line — from slow performance to data loss. These quick weekly habits will help keep your system clean, secure, and running smoothly.

✅ 1. Restart Your Computer

Don’t just put it to sleep — do a full restart at least once a week. This:

  • Clears memory and temp files

  • Resets processes

  • Helps apply updates

💡 Remember: a restart is not the same as shutdown on Windows 10/11 with Fast Startup enabled.

✅ 2. Run Windows Updates

Make sure your system stays secure and stable by:

  • Going to Settings > Windows Update

  • Clicking Check for Updates

  • Installing anything marked “Important” or “Security”

🚫 Don’t ignore update prompts — outdated systems are more vulnerable to attacks and bugs.

✅ 3. Check Your Storage Space

Open File Explorer > This PC
Make sure your main drive (usually C:) has at least 10–15% free space.

If it’s getting full:

  • Clear your Downloads folder

  • Empty the Recycle Bin

  • Move large files to cloud or external storage

✅ 4. Close Unused Apps and Browser Tabs

Keeping too many programs or tabs open slows down performance.

  • Save your work and close anything you’re not actively using.

  • Use Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) to check memory usage if things feel sluggish.

✅ 5. Run a Malware Scan

Use Windows Defender or your preferred antivirus to run a Quick Scan once per week.

Steps for Windows Security:

  1. Open Start > type “Windows Security”

  2. Go to Virus & threat protection

  3. Click Quick scan

✅ 6. Backup Important Files

If you're not using automatic backup:

  • Copy key files to OneDrive, Google Drive, or an external drive weekly.

  • Make sure business-critical data isn’t only saved locally.

🔐 Ask CalTec about setting up automated backup options if you’re unsure.

✅ 7. Empty Your Recycle Bin

Just deleting files doesn’t free up space — they sit in the Recycle Bin.
Right-click the Recycle Bin icon on your desktop and choose Empty Recycle Bin (after double-checking for anything you still need).

✅ 8. Check for Software Updates

For apps like Zoom, Chrome, Office, etc. — open them and check for updates. Many update automatically, but some need a manual refresh.

Apps like Chrome often show a colored “Update” alert in the top-right corner.

✅ 9. Clean Your Desktop (Digitally and Physically)

  • Remove old screenshots and clutter from your desktop

  • Organize files into folders

  • Wipe down your keyboard and screen with appropriate cleaning materials

✅ 10. Restart Your Router or Modem (Optional)

If your internet feels slow or drops often, a weekly power cycle of your modem/router can help:

  • Unplug power for 30 seconds

  • Plug back in and let it fully restart
